I was out of shape. I played sports in high school and college, and enjoyed running races after graduation, but in the few years prior to F3 I was completely out of shape. I had young children and no time as I was finishing a degree meaning I was staying up late every night.

I was struggling through a race with a friend who was in F3 in North Carolina, and he told me about it. He had been telling me about it for years but I just kind of politely listened. After that race I looked up to see if there were any F3 locations near me, and sure enough one had just started at Creekview High School! My back had begun to hurt and I knew I needed to exercise, so I went. My wife never thought it would stick because I have never been able to wake up early. Every time I say I’m going to wake up early and work out it never happens. That first morning I struggled. I could not keep up, but guys kept looping back and dragging me along. I made it again two days later…same thing. Then I made it to the Saturday workout which was way more intense than anything I had done. In the backblast that day Babyface made mention in the Naked Man Moleskin that I had made it to all three workouts my first week, and it made me feel like I was accomplishing something.

Then my back went out. I had to go to the emergency room and eventually surgery, but the whole time I was out kept getting encouraging notes from my F3 bros.

Finally I was able to exercise again. I went back out, and it felt like the first time all over again. But I made it. Folks had to carry my sandbag for me a couple of times, but I got stronger. So in January of 2018 I committed to a Spartan Trifecta, which is something I always wanted to accomplish. And going from not being able to walk to completing a Spartan Trifecta within 1 year is one of the great accomplishments of my life. But more importantly, when I crossed the finish line, two PAX from my first workout and who named me, waited for me there at the Finish Line.

I feel better in life, as a father and as a husband, and am deeply grateful for my friend to just take a look at the website and see if there is F3 near me. That chance comment changed my life.
